Eustream joining cooperation in South-East Europe
Bratislava, October 28, 2008 – The largest carrier of natural gas in the EU, eustream, a.s., has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Transmission System Operators of South-East European countries on Wednesday, October 22. The main goal of their cooperation is to strengthen coordination for network extensions, enhance transparency, harmonise technical standards and thus increase security of energy supplies in Europe.
The Transmission System Operators of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy and Slovenia agreed on intensifying their cooperation. This week, they signed a respective Memorandum of Understanding in Bucharest. “This is a milestone on the road to establish a framework for voluntary cooperation between pipeline operators in South-East Europe” stated Antoine Jourdain, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eustream.The region South-East Europe is characterised by the importance of gas transit and the dominance of non-EU gas supplies. Due to the different standards of national pipeline operators, transportation across borders can still be improved. “Through a closer coorporation with other Transmission System Operators, we will improve gas transmission services across the region and contribute to the development of the EU gas market” explained Andreas Rau, Member of the Board of Directors of Eustream. By signing this Memorandum of Understanding, the partners are also complying with the targets of European Regulators, who launched the Gas Regional Initiatives in 2006.
* Background Gas Regional Initiatives:
In April 2006, the “European Regulators' Group for Electricity and Gas" (ERGEG) launched the Gas Regional Initiatives (GRIs) with the overall aim to push forward the development of Regional gas markets. Industry, Member States, the European Commission and other stakeholders are collaborating with the regulators and the TSOs. The South- South-East Gas Regional Initiative
(GRI-SSE) is one of three defined regional initiatives.
Eustream is the largest natural gas carrier in the European Union with a transmission capacity of more than 90 bcm/a.
